How to Share Large PDF Files Safely

Sooner or later you need to send a PDF that is simply too big for email. A portfolio, a scanned contract, a proposal full of images: many mail providers limit attachments to somewhere around 20–25 MB, and even when a file fits, a copy stays in every inbox it touches.

Why attachments fall short

  • Size limits bounce large files or silently turn them into links you do not control.
  • Copies multiply. Forwarding spreads the file to people you never chose.
  • No take-back. Once it is sent, you cannot expire it or see whether anyone opened it.

A hosted link keeps one copy of the file in one place. You decide how long the link works, how many times it can be downloaded and whether people may download it at all.

A quick safe-sharing checklist

  1. Shrink the file first. Compress images and remove unused pages (see our guide to reducing PDF file size).
  2. Set an expiry. Most documents only need to be available for a few days.
  3. Limit downloads when the file is meant for one or two people.
  4. Use view-only mode for drafts that people only need to read.
  5. Send the link through a channel you trust, and avoid putting confidential details in the link text.

Where PDFHost fits

You can upload a document without creating an account, pick an expiry and download limit, and get a private link in seconds. When time or downloads run out, the file is permanently deleted.
